Bass Reeves was the first African-American to serve as a Deputy U.S. Marshal working in the deadly Indian Territory west of the Mississippi overrun with horse thieves, cattle rustlers, gunslingers, bandits, bootleggers, swindlers, and murderers.  He was a gunfighter, farmer, scout, tracker, railroad agent and a runaway slave. He served over 35 years as a peace officer and spoke several Native American languages, including Cherokee, Choctaw, Chickasaw, Seminole, and Creek. Bass made more than 4,000 arrests, including his own son who was tried and convicted of murder, and killed 21 men in the line of duty.

Bass Reeves was the real life Lone Ranger!
